Sidney Poitier is a Bahamian-American actor, film director, and ambassador.  In 1964 Poitier became the first Black male and Afro-Bahamian actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor, having been nominated for the award twice. Poitier was appointed as a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in  1974. In 2009 Poitier received the  Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor.
